Have you ever been in a situation where you want to buy something from ebay like a sofa or a TV but the seller is 1800 miles away from you and the item is only for “local pickup only”? The problem of shipping large items is already a thing of the past. Gone were the days when you have to go through the hassle of shipping large items for a price that is more than the cost of the item. Heavy or not it’s no longer a problem. Now you have a wide array of choices to choose from when it comes to shipping large items.

It is true that getting a large item from Point A to Point B involves a lot more than slapping on a stamp and hand it off to your postman. Usual rules in shipping an item does not apply when sending a large package. So how would you know that the item you are sending qualifies as a freight? Well, if the item is bulky and too heavy then there is no way you can send it in a regular shipping. An item that requires special handling will surely go to a parcel service or a trucking company.

By Freight

Big shipping companies such as UPS and FedEx are only accepting packages for up to 150 pounds. For large items over 150 pounds the cheapest and easiest way to send it is through LTL(Less Than Truckload). Organizing a normal truck freight can be very tricky if you don’t have any experience. But the thing is you don’t have to own a large company to utilize LTL shipment because whether you are selling your dining set or moving your sofa bed you can take advantage of this kind of shipment.

If you are fond of buying large items such as Dozers, Loaders and Skid Steers then you should be particular with you freight services because most shipping companies are not reliable enough to ship large items. Most LTL charges are based on bedspace used and weight, and of course whether the unit is wide or oversize in some way. So when shipping large items across the country the charges are based on a percentage of the total charge rated in miles times the bedspace. The carriers that offer LTL services are networked nationwide. But if you are shipping large items on a regular basis the best thing you can do is to go to through a freight broker.

Imagine paying thousands of dollars to ship a 8000 pounds of skidsteer, not affordable right? The best to avoid this ,is to contact your local trucker and gather some information about it. In fact you can ask him to post your load on various networks that list loads without brokering them. The broker is the one in charge in negotiating discounts that you can’t have when dealing directly with the carrier. Through this you can save hundreds of dollars for you are directly dealing with the trucker. Now you can seat down and relax for everything is taken care of from picking up the item to confirming the delivery. The same rate applies for shipping palletized items and attachments but on the other hand the rates are controlled by Department of Transportation (DOT). The shipment is rated by weight and cubic dimensions or space taken up in a trailer. The class of freight also determines the charge by 100 weight or 100 pounds increments.

One company that offers freight services is TSI (Transit Systems Inc.), a freight shipping company that frees you from shipping paperwork and hassles, and overpricing cost of shipping boxes, crates and pallets. The good thing about this freight company is that customer doesn’t have to worry about tariffs or after-delivery charges, freight classes or even the package dimension. All they need is the package weight and then item is good to go. So make sure to research more about the freight services before getting one and choose the company that answers all your shipping needs.

Parcel Services

Parcel rates may vary and every rate is billed according to a certain shipping dimension, like the size of its length and grid. The length is the longest side of a package and the girth is the length of the string you would need to wrapped it around the two smaller sides of a package. The price of oversized items also depends on the shipping provider.

UPS offers two types of oversized packages. The oversized 1 and the oversized 2. Oversized 1 package is a combination of length and girth that does not exceed to 84 inches or is equal to or less than 108 inches. Package billable weight is 30 pounds. The UPS allowable size per package is 130 inches or 330 centimeters in length and girth and maximum length per package is 108 inches or 270 centimeters. An irregular sized package is a parcel that is over 60 inches or the package second longest side is over 30 inches.

FedEx also offers different oversized package rates based on its weight, length and girth. A package should weigh less than 30 pounds and it should be equal to or less than 108 inches in combined length and girth. This category is classified as FedEx Ground Oversized 1 package and its transportation charge is the same as a 30 pound package.
